www.eldritchpress.org/nh/sb1.htmlSeeing that we are all so well acquainted with Bercovitch (I hope ) I thought it would be interesting to hear your opinions about this essay. The line that stood out to me the most was "Moral: society imprisons the self...Moral: society kills natural desire" I felt this encompasses our discussions over the past several weeks. Is the influence of society good for the development of self? For example: In the scarlet letter Dimmesdale does not confess for fear of being prosecuted by society, though doing this contradicts with his personal values.
