www.age-of-the-sage.org/psychology/milgram_obedience_experiment.htmlThis website shows that people under the command of another actually administered sometimes deadly shocks to someone sitting in an electric chair. This shows that people will do anything if they are commanded to do so. This experiment relates to the Crucible because the Puritans of Salem were told by Abigail and the girls that had slowly become saints and leaders in the town that the people they were crying out against were witches. The people such as Hale and Danforth actually believed them because they had manipulated the consensus in their favor. These people such as Hale and Danforth are not violent people, but when they were under this illusion of authority they were sending many innocent people to hang.

We learned about the Stanley Milgram experiment in psychology class and how people are obedient to authority. My Rabbi at my temple and I were talking about how the Nazis obeyed authority and killed many jews even though some of them knew it was wrong. My Rabbi was actually part of the Milgram experiment and administered the electric shock. Another experiment that shows obedience to authority is the Philip Zimbardo experiment. It is very interesting how people listened to authority or as Sophie said the "illusion of authority" even when they knew it was wrong. Check out the website which explains the experiment in detail. www.prisonexp.org/
