Error In Terror: Persecution for the Sake of Consensus' Security
"Cursed for Staying.. we will now be cursed for leaving" (Graham 1)

In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, people must operate abiding by the rituals of consensus in order to remain in the consensus, as leaders must create them in order to sustain the consensus. Today, tyrannies are more subtle, however they still exist and are found making false accusations to display a problem bigger than at hand, and ergo expand their power. The tyranny of consensus instills fear to enforce their power and prevent possible threats to the tyranny’s eminence. While these tyrannies strengthen society is weakened, and as patriotic exemplum are made, unpatriotic feelings grow, and the eventual collapse of the consensus results in further trauma.
In Salem 1692, citizens that were blacklisted were disciplined by the tyranny’s implementing physical torture, as well as removing them from society; hence they were forced outside the consensus. The people, who partook in Salem’s purges, rather then cleansing Salem, exonerated it of intellect. Upon their realizations, they were only more shamed for becoming a majority of agape and clearly incorrectly orientated people.
Currently, the American government, a presiding element over many American’s, is still found composing ethically corrupt and untrue lists of dissenting Americans, or rather, threats to their consensus. However, these “terrorist watch lists” encompass a grander population of 860,000 people, many of which completely unrelated to terrorism by any means, while others remain on the list for their names bearing a semblance to that of an actual suspect. James Graham, a former Foreign Service Officer is most likely listed due to his view of the war on Iraq, that while the situation in Iraq “continues to deteriorate.. Anti-American feelings will increase”—which differs from the security fiends of The United States who indicted him, who wish to portray a strong America (Graham 1). John Graham told National Public Radio that the list consisted of people that were “suspected of being threats to national security” (11/8/07), and that he was offended because he always thought himself a “patriotic American”. While this he may have been, Graham certainly wasn’t speaking the rhetoric of America’s national security; who felt Graham should be listed as a threat. After two years of being given trouble at airports, applying for visas, and jobs, Graham is still left in the dark as to how his name can be removed from the list, or any explanation for its existence there.
Likewise, an American born Muslim, upon his fourth time being detained (the three previous times his name was said to be cleared), Akaf Raman was separated form his family, and then handcuffed to a chair while being kicked, and questioned as to his knowledge of the September Eleventh attacks. This method has been repeatedly used in American history, in attempt to force one into admitting to false accusations. However, this did not have the desired affect on Raman, for not enough people are of accord with that consensus. This is because America today is a population largely made up of dis-consensus, that the manipulation of consensus is a more difficult task.
