Dominique Gillyard, Period 2
As there exists a constant revision, not replacement, of ideals within civilization, those ideals, which were present throughout history, have come to endure within present society. In turn, many of the ideologies that were prevalent in the past can be examined through the events of the contemporary world. Such an example is found within the current stagehand strike on Broadway as it effectively conveys the concept of the tyranny of consensus in order to gain advantage within the Broadway community. In the creation of this crisis, the stagehands have utilized both the unquestionable importance of their work and their timing of the crisis in order to coerce and exploit the Broadway community for their own benefit.
As a result of this crisis, the stagehands are able to assert the importance of their work as a tool with which to exploit Broadway, and thus, attain advantage within it. As the stagehands maintain absolute control over the entirety of the mechanics behind the plays, they prove essential to the functionality of Broadway as a whole, and consequentially, their strike has left production at a standstill. In this, the stagehands are able to manipulate and control Broadway into yielding to their demands as they have established their authority and significance within the institution. Not only this, but the stagehands’ affirmation and exhibition of their importance has caused a power shift. This enables a realization of the true magnitude and effect of their cause as their rising power has increasingly undermines the order of command within Broadway.
The timing in which the stagehands chose to initiate their crisis is essential toward the overall efficacy of their manipulation of the Broadway community. In order to retain an effectual impact, the stagehands chose to hold their strike at the beginning of the holiday season, one of the busiest times of year, at which their absence would have a conclusive effect felt not only by Broadway, but by the patrons as well. In doing this, the stagehands are able to coerce the Broadway community into submitting towards their demands as the pressure from the external society also mounts against them. In addition, the stagehands are able to more efficiently exploit Broadway’s unavoidable financial abatement as a measure to have their demands more readily met.
Within the exploration of the crisis created by stagehands to exploit the establishment of Broadway as a whole, the tyranny of consensus proves to subsist effectually throughout the span of time. Despite the difference of environment in which the ideology is espoused, it is constantly revised and reinvented as an effective tool with which to gain power and advantage within society. In this, the themes and ideals that were existent within the past prove to withstand the customs of modern society through the utilization of recreated rhetoric and ritual, which enable the ideologies to prevail invariably throughout time.
