Who you gonna call? Crisis relievers: the similarities between Hale and Schwarzenegger as being the mediator during a crisis
A crisis is bound to arise in society and it can either take the course of creating fear or creating chaos. Though it may originate from different consensuses, it impacts everyone and everything in society. In each crisis there is usually a man behind the scenes who hopes to uncover the truth and take the measures needed to preserve justice and negotiate a compromise. In the Salem Witch Trials the mediator was Reverend John Hale. In the Hollywood writers strike of 2007 it has been Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
In 1692 the crisis in the Salem community was the witch trials. Public accusations of witchcraft created a crisis that controlled the Salem community by means of fear. Fear was allowing innocent people to be put in jail or even to death. The hysteria of Salem’s witchcraft trials initiated a tyranny of consensus that gave power to people either by acknowledgment or through the gain of land. John Hale was the force in the witch trials who tried to uncover the origins behind the accusations of witchcraft while protecting the innocent people. Before the warrants from the court were distributed, Hale traveled from house-to-house trying to learn about the people of Salem and inform them of what changes each must make in their lifestyle in order to protect themselves from being accused of witchcraft. Also, during the trial Hale was trying to see both sides of the proceedings. He listened to the prosecutor and perpetrator. By the end of the trial, Hale wanted Proctor to confess to his supposed use of witchcraft in order to save himself from death. Hale was always looking for the most peaceful and practical ways of resolving the crisis.
Reverend Hale is similar to Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Hollywood writers strike of 2007. Schwarzenegger has been advocating for a quick resolution of the writers strike in hopes of resuming production. He also has been doing this in order to help the other workers in the studios who aren’t involved yet are being adversely affected by the strike. This strike, like all crises, has created fear and chaos in society. In Hollywood, the writers have refused to contribute their scripts to the TV shows of major studios and production companies because of the unequal distribution of profits from DVD sales and Internet sources. It is also adversely affecting both the economy and the people throughout the country. The studios, the advertisers, and many cities have been loosing substantial amounts of money each day that the writers have been on strike. Like Hale, Schwarzenegger has been trying to represent both sides of the disagreement in order to resolve this situation. Schwarzenegger is looking for a practical way to resolve this strike and protect the economy and the financial well being of the studio workers.
Both Hale and Schwarzenegger are working to uncover the truth and take the appropriate actions needed to preserve justice and negotiate a compromise. These two men want what is right; they want to resolve the crisis.
