The Puritans believed materialism was a sin and they strongly opposed any who valued materials more than God. Although this might have been the way these people where perceived the truth lies underneath their sly cover. Frankly, the founders of the “American Way” were very materialistic, Sacvan Bercovitch stated that these people were “openly materialistic” who found ways to “explain away their greed”(Bercovitch 29/32). The views of Americans today were sculpted by the thoughts and beliefs of the Puritans. In many present day affluent communities of America people highly value material possessions. The Puritans way of hiding and explaining away their greed helped to shape the nation of goods that America has become today.
Anne Bradstreet a Puritan women and writer admits herself to be materialistic when her home burns down “my pleasant things in ashes lie”. Although she later corrects herself and states “Adieu, Adieu, all’s vanity” she coerces the reader to believe that she was truly a “pure Puritan” and that although her house had burned down she was not upset. The Puritans used God as a means to explain away their greed. The Puritans believed that when God was happy with them, they would receive material possessions and wealth. Driving through the affluent American town of Westfield it is evident that materialism plays a large role in this community. Many people have large homes and expensive cars. Today’s Americans try to hide their love for material possessions much like the Puritans. Americans begin to cover their passion for material objects by aiding philanthropic organizations which makes them feel less greedy, when, in reality this is simply not the case. Like Anne Bradstreet tried to do in her poem the American families such as those in Westfield work to cover up their mass amount of greed towards material objects.
In the play The Crucible, Paris the reverend was a highly materialistic man who many frowned upon in his community. He was formerly a merchant who decided to come to Salem and become the reverend; unfortunately his merchant nature did not leave him. During the first encounter the reader has with Paris, he is arguing that he is not getting his fire wood at the right time. Although many people were frustrated and appalled by these remarks the witch hunts that were to follow in the play were also fueled by people who were looking to gain more materials, such as land in the Putnam’s case. Many people in America claim to be unattached to material objects when in reality this ideology is simply a cover to make themselves seem less superficial. As Tony Hoagland said in his poem America “each day you watch rivers of bright merchandise run past you and you are floating in your pleasure boat upon this river”, he is saying that we as Americans do not care about others as long as we obtain the material possessions that we long for. Americans obtained their materialistic beliefs from the “American Way” that the equally materialistic Puritans had created.
