After the devastating effects of World War II and the atomic bomb had shocked the world, a shift in attitude and mindset was seen internationally. A definitive truth had no boundaries and meaning, and after speculation of the meaning of things, some came to believe there was no meaning at all. Instead of searching for meaning as modernists would, the postmodern literary movement disregards this possibility of significance, often parodying the reality and lack of significance in the world through literature.
The post-modern movement has brought with it many new concepts and ideas never thought of before. The original formal structure of things has been eliminated in this post-modern ideology. Because there is no center or real truth to the world, reality television of today’s society along with the media reports of “breaking news” fit into this post-modern category. So-called reality television is not actually reality, and the “breaking news” has turned into minor unimportant events, only to draw in the audience for their own gain.
This obscure ideology is prevalent in Don Delillo’s novel, White Noise. The media will create huge events out of virtually nothing for its own gain. During the toxic airborne event, the media sensationalized the episode by creating more ominous titles that would manipulate the ideas of the public; they changed it from the feathery plume to the black billowing cloud to the ultimate evil-boding name of the toxic airborne event (113).

Not only does the media attempt to control the feelings of the public with the titles that it gives such events, but it uses the information they choose to divulge to do the same. This is evident in the novel when information about the symptoms from The Toxic Airborne Event are circulating, "it doesn't cause nausea. What does it cause? Heart palpitations and a sense of deja vu" (114). The media does not wait to confirm these peices of information and instead reports on whatever they think will grab the attention of the public. This is evident today with the misleading titles given to news articles. Also, the news has become more and more of a form of entertainment than merely a means of spreading information.

This obscure ideology is prevalent in Don Delillo’s novel, White Noise. The media will create huge events out of virtually nothing for its own gain. During the Toxic Airborne Event, the media sensationalized the episode by creating more ominous titles that would manipulate the ideas of the public. Originally entitled the feathery plume, the name was changed to the black billowing cloud and then eventually to the ultimate evil-boding name of the toxic airborne event (113).
Not only does the media attempt to control the feelings of the public with the titles that it gives such events, but it uses information to influence the feelings of the viewer. This is evident in the novel when the media releases information about the symptoms which occur from The Toxic Airborne Event. The news originally stated the Airborne Toxic Event caused nausea and dizziness however, only a few hours later they release "it doesn't cause nausea. [It causes] Heart palpitations and a sense of deja vu" (114). The media does not wait to confirm these pieces of information but instead reports on whatever they think will grab the attention of the public. This is evident today with the misleading titles given to news articles.
Also, the news has become more a form of entertainment than merely a means of spreading information. Leading news articles are now about celebrities, and even the way anchors cover the news is for entertainment. After only one news story there is a commercial break. The news is no longer about sharing necessary information, but about entertaining the public and trying to sell new items.

The number of breaks in news broadcasts shows the networks effort to keep viewers hooked. They give one small detail about a story they have sensationalized and turned into breaking news before cutting to a commercial break, forcing the viewers to be bombarded with advertisements if they want to hear the rest of the story. This is the now accepted postmodern format for all news broadcast. They selectively communicate bits and pieces of an entire story, so the viewer never receives the full truth. They only think they have the full story but in reality, they do not. This is also seen in Delillo’s White Noise through the Toxic Airborne Event because the media in that case never gives the facts about the event because they, themselves, are not certain of what is going on and therefore report what ever will grab the viewers’ attention instead.
