Journalists, especially W. R. Hearst and the foreign correspondents of his New York Journal, had an immense impact of the outset and progression of the Spanish-American War by swaying public opinion in favor of Cuban independence with sensational and often fictitious stories and by actively changing the course of the war through their actions.
